• We can create custom archival single or double mats in shades of gray, white, black, and several colors for your prints.
• In some cases we even format the prints to include a white border with text at the bottom, or what we call our Poster Format.
• All our matting is done using archival Crescent Ragmat with a white core, and all materials are archival, for a lifetime of at least 100 years.
• If you would like your fine art print or a print from your session matted a special way, send email with what you want us to do and we can work out the details before ordering the print. Be sure to include either the size of print you plan to order or the nominal frame size you plan to use (where the glass goes). Custom Matting Details
Custom mats by Allinda Photography are archival, and will not deteriorate if stored under glass or plastic, protected from constant exposure to direct sunlight. Custom mats are designed specifically for your print, and can be color-coordinated to work well with either elements of the image or your wall colors. You can specify mat colors and other specifics in an email to Allinda Photography before ordering your print from the Bay Photo Store. We will order the print, and then ship your matted prints (USA. only).
The Basics of Matting
The outside dimensions of the mat correspond to the space where the glass goes into the back of your frame. The mat cutout is sized to lay over the print, revealing only the portion that is desired. A backing made of archival dense cardboard or foam core the same size as the mat is cut to hold the print. To make your print look it's best the mat border should be the same width all around the print, or as close to that as possible. That's much easier to do if the mat is custom-cut for the print. Mats can be a single layer over your print, which works fine for many prints, but double or even triple mats can make a print really stand out, as shown in the examples below.
The "Poster Format"
In this format the title is printed below the image, and the print is signed by the artist on the white paper below the image. The actual image has a thin black border, called a "stroke". The text and stroke is added to the digital file before the print is made, and the image and text sized to fit inside the mat. Normally only a single mat is needed for Poster Format prints since the white paper adequately separates the image from the mat. Several Poster Format photographs are available at the Allinda Photography Fine Art Store. If you want a custom Poster Format print of a photo you see in the Bay Photo Store, send an email with the title of the image, size and text you want and we will custom print and mat a Poster Format print for you.
Mat Colors
Allinda Photography normally stocks a few specific colors. Others can be obtained by special order. Those stocked are shown in the examples below. Colors you see on your monitor may not be accurate unless your monitor is calibrated; nevertheless, you can use the information to make a decision.
Pricing of Custom Mats
The price of matting a print includes the heavy backing we provide, the single or double sheet of matboard, cutting the mats, and mounting the print. The price range for single matting a print ranges from $30 to $85 for mat sizes from 16x20 to 22x30, including shipping. The corresponding range for double matting is from $50 to $100.

If you are unsure of how to format your total package, send us an email and tell us what you can. We'll suggest an appropriate package. Allinda Photography can make extremely high quality custom prints from 16 bit files with a very large color gamut. This allows the colors to be very accurate. For this service you can send email to initiate contact, and let us know which image from the Bay Photo Store and size you want, up to 16 inches wide. We'll send you a quote for printing the image. Custom printing is especially useful if you want a matted photo in a special size. If you are interested in our Poster Format or sizes not available from the Bay Photo catalog it may be the only way to achieve the desired results.
