This sunrise showing Oaxaca city looking east, was captured from Cerro del Fortin, a high hill in west Oaxaca city. A few minutes later, as the light from the sun increased, the lights were turned off, and the city appeared dark.

This is the scene you would see if you were walking east on Allende from Cerro del Fortin, which is a lot higher. The church you see in the center is Templo de Santo Domingo de Gauzman. It is a mixed residential and industrial area, and there are a lot of cars, as there are everywhere in Oaxaca City.

This family was walking by while I was set up on a park bench at the Zócala. The late day sun was in their faces, but they seemed to enjoy it anyway.

This woman and her daughter, dressed for the festival, were in just the right light, with a perfect background. Notice how the light wraps around from back to front, and rims the faces against the dark background.

This colorful image shows a woman carrying red clay pots away from the Socrates Garden Market, market, which is behind the photographer. Signs on the cross street, Av. Independencia, point to the "Zócala" and the "Catedral", both a few blocks east of the Socrates Garden Market. Scenes such as this are typical sights in Oaxaca.

At the Zócala, in order to capture images of interesting people we set up at places where the light would be behind us, but the background would be interesting but not too light to avoid distractions. Here, the background is a fountain, and the young girl was walking past, eyeing the photographer with a suspicious look. Fortunately the shutter was released just before the shadow of a pole obscured her face, adding a little more interest to the image. We found that children in Oaxaca made excellent subjects.

This very serious-looking elderly woman was carrying a basket at the Zócala, possibly to sell her items there.

This is an image made from a park bench at the Zócala, in front of a fountain spouting water. The late afternoon light did its magic here. The gentleman looks very intent on where he was going, and is also very distinguished, helped by the wide-brimmed hat.

For Woman with Basket on Head at the Zócala, the shutter speed was reduced to introduce a slight blurring effect, panning with the subject to create a blurred look to the background. The sunlit woman in the image was carrying a large basket on her head, probably to take some items to another location to set up for sale.
